Manchester United Interested in Bringing Back Player First Bought in Louis van Gaal Era

Memphis Depay

Manchester United are open to the prospect of signing Barcelona winger Memphis Depay in the summer transfer window, as per Gerard Romero. The Dutchman is no longer wanted at the Camp Nou after the arrival of Raphinha from Leeds United.

United Could Bolster Their Frontline With Depay’s Signing

The Red Devils had initially signed the Dutch winger way back in 2015, with then-manager Louis van Gaal bringing him to Old Trafford. However, Depay struggled to properly adapt to the intense conditions in the Premier League and was unable to prove himself at the Theatre of Dreams.

He only made 53 appearances across two seasons, scoring seven goals in all competitions. The forward was then sold to Olympique Lyonnais for around £22 million (including add-ons) as United believed he wasn’t cut out for them. However, Depay proved them wrong by enjoying a prolific spell with the French side – scoring 76 goals in 178 appearances for them.

Now with Barcelona ready to sell him within a year of signing him, the Manchester giants have entered the race to get him. They remain interested in signing Depay but are currently focused on signing another player from the La Liga giants – Frenkie de Jong – as the competition starts mounting for the 28-year-old winger.

Depay Attracting Interested From Multiple Premier League Clubs

United are not the only club who are interested in making a move for the Dutch international either. Romero also reports that Barcelona have two offers from the Premier League for him, with both just over £15 million.

The other club isn’t mentioned yet, but one is expected to be the Red Devils. For now, however, the Spanish giants are assessing all their options as they don’t want to sell Depay for anything massively under his value. The Dutchman might not be in Xavi’s plans for the upcoming season anymore, but he won’t leave for a club that doesn’t interest him.

Barcelona are keen on offloading players like the 28-year-old to trim their wage bill, which will help register new signings like Robert Lewandowski into their La Liga squad. It remains to be seen whether they’re able to do so with widespread interest for the winger.
