The Germany international played 28 minutes of the game with Koln today before being forced off. Bayer Leverkusen went on to lose the game 1-0 without their youthful talisman.

Florian Wirtz has been on fine form this campaign, involved in 24 goals in his 31 appearances for Leverkusen, who sit third in the table, behind only Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

The 18-year-old’s absence will be of great detriment to Leverkusen’s season. They may hold third spot right now, but they don’t have a firm grip on it – there is just one point between third and sixth. The side are in a good position to say they might be playing Champions League football next season but losing one of their best players hinders their fight for third or fourth.

Wirtz contributed to 17 league goals this season with seven goals and 10 assists. Leverkusen’s total tally – 64 – is just one shy of Borussia Dortmund’s.

As the old saying goes, ‘when it rains it pours’ – the Bundesliga side are also without leading striker Patrick Schick, who has scored 20 of those league goals this season.

Florian Wirtz is a player with plenty of potential combined with his current ability. Having attracted the interest of several European giants, he is especially an important player for Bayer right now – both on the pitch and for a potential large transfer fee in the future.
