One defender who has been garnering interest from major teams across Europe is Bayern Munich’s centre-back Niklas Sule. The 26-year-old’s contract with the Bundesliga club was set to expire this summer which meant he was available for free.
A number of teams chased his signature but it is Bayern’s rival Borussia Dortmund that has secured the signature of the German international. Dortmund’s Michael Zorc, according to Fabrizio Romano, has confirmed that the length of the deal will keep Sule at the club for four seasons: “We are pleased that we’re able to sign a German national player in Niklas Süle and retain him for four years”.
Niklas Sule Officially Set to Join Borussia Dortmund
A Decade of Quality
Niklas Sule has been playing at the highest level of German football since 2013 when he made the leap from Hoffenheim’s youth feeder system to the first team. After an impressive stint with Hoffenheim that saw him make 116 appearances for the club, he made the unsurprising move to Bayern Munich alongside Sebastian Rudy.
Sule hit the ground running with Bayern and established himself as a regular face in their squad until an ACL injury in October 2019 took him out of action for almost a year. He did find his way back into the first-team picture and currently has 159 appearances for Bayern to his name.
Dortmund’s Gain
The singing of Niklas Sule on a free transfer will further strengthen a Dortmund side that has made moves this season to strengthen their overall squad. Defending has been one of Dortmund’s weak points this season as the team have conceded 36 goals in the Bundesliga, more than anyone else in the top 12 spots of the league. The presence and winning attitude of Niklas Sule will go a long way to helping them shore up things at the back and grind out clean sheets.
