Are Spurs Making a Mistake?
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano gave the latest on the player’s future: “Tottenham have decided to sell Steven Bergwijn this month. Various club[s] are showing interest in Dutch winger. Ajax are among [the] clubs that have submitted already an offer for Bergwijn on [a] potential permanent move – still nothing agreed with Spurs. Open race.”
It is not surprising that Bergwijn is attracting attention from top clubs like Ajax. His recent performance against West Ham United was something to shout about. He finally got himself on the scoresheet which gave him the confidence to go on a mazy run to set up another.
But confidence really has been an issue for the Dutchman. In 64 appearances for the club, he has scored five goals and notched just 10 assists. A very underwhelming return, especially compared to his PSV Eindhoven career. At PSV, Bergwijn almost had a goal or assist per every two matches (149 appearances, 72 direct goal involvements).
Injuries have plagued Bergwijn, too. An ankle injury and then a calf injury have kept him out of nine matches this season alone. In general, he has struggled for match fitness. The ultimate low was when he was sent home from international duty by Frank de Boer for fitness issues.
New Challenge for Bergwijn as Spurs Sharpen Squad
Let’s state the obvious. Bergwijn needs to play more regularly if he is to return to his previous levels of goals and assists. At Spurs he has only been a fringe player. Recently he has put together some more impressive performances, but he has failed to perform consistently with the cameos he has had from the bench. Returning to the Eredivisie and getting more minutes under his belt will surely help him to get firing on all cylinders once again.
At 24 years old, Bergwijn still has time to push on and become a quality player for a European side. It would be easy to put together a Spurs highlights reel, including his fantastic debut goal on the half-volley against Manchester City. He has talent that would definitely benefit Ajax, or his other suitors.
Conte needs to bring in players that he feels suits his system. Tottenham may be in the clear (in terms of FFP) to splash the cash but chairman Daniel Levy is still keeping the purse strings tight. So it is necessary to trim down the squad in order to bring in new faces.
Tanguy Ndombele has seemingly played his last game at the club after being booed off the pitch for his dismal performance against Morecambe. Bergwijn was booed onto the pitch when he replaced Lucas Moura against Manchester United, in the pivotal moment where Nuno got sacked. Both players had so much promise, yet did not reach the heights in a Spurs shirt.
