Ella Toone: Career So Far
Toone returned to Manchester United in 2018 when the club formed a senior women’s team. She had been at the club’s centre of excellence in her younger days.
Now in 2021, she has played more games and scored more goals than anyone for the Red Devils – 36 goals in 83 games to be exact.
Toone made her international debut in February 2021, scoring a penalty v Northern Ireland.
More recently, She has gained a regular spot in Sarina Wiegman’s England XI, scoring her first senior hat-trick against Latvia on October 26.
The 22-year-old is in the latest Lionesses squad, alongside Manchester United teammates Mary Earps, Katie Zelem and Alessia Russo.
Toone is up there with the very best players at Manchester United and certainly, being just 22-years-old, has the capacity to get even better.
She has already scored five goals in six England appearances. Toone represented Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year.
This season, Toone, who can play in the midfield and up front, has scored four and assisted four in all competitions so far for Manchester United.
Ambitions Matched by Manchester United
Ella Toone told manutd.com: “To sign a new contract at the club is really exciting for me; United has been a big part of my life growing up and I’m over the moon to continue my journey.
“The club meets my ambitions as a player, I’ve learnt so much already and I just want to keep working hard, keep contributing and have success here.
“I just want to also say a big thanks to everyone who has been involved in my journey so far; from family, friends, teammates, staff and, of course, the fans, whose support I never take for granted.
“I want to make you all proud and create more memories with this club.”
Marc Skinner added: “I’m delighted that Ella has signed a new contract with the club, she is a wonderful talent and her stats this season speak for themselves. She has been an integral part of the squad.
“She is so versatile as a player, and her ability to find pockets of space and manipulate the ball in tight areas is where she really shines as an attacking force. There is so much room to grow with Ella too, she is only 22 years old and is always learning, so we know, if she continues to work hard, she will have such a bright future.”
Manchester United Progress
Manchester United stormed to the top of the women’s game in England since their formation in 2018. Ella Toone has been key to that, under Casey Stoney and now Marc Skinner too. The Red Devil’s won the Women’s Championship in their first season and have since finished fourth consecutively in the Super League, falling one point short of their Champions League places last season, something they have made very clear remains their target in this campaign too.
United sit fifth, three points short of Brighton & Hove Albion in third – Champions League spot.
It’s not going to get easier for the Red Devils, who host Arsenal on Sunday, November 21 before a trip to Brighton.
The Manchester derby win in midweek may have given them a much needed boost.
