The Premier League is home to some of the best goalkeepers in the world, players who often go without the recognition they deserve because they aren’t scoring goals themselves on a regular basis.
These players can be the difference-makers in games, whether it’s by saving at a key moment, a penalty stop, or just a number of saves together to form a clean sheet.
It’s time they did get a little recognition, so here is a look at some world-class keepers in the Premier League.
The World Class Goalkeepers in the Premier League
Ederson – Manchester City
The 28-year-old Manchester City goalkeeper is one of the ‘new style’ keepers that we have seen emerge over the past decade. Not only is Ederson capable of playing well in goal and stopping the opposition from scoring, but he has excellent distribution skills, sweeps behind his defence and in many situations, acts like an 11th outfield player.
Manchester City play a high defensive line and also like to play out from the back. The reason they do this so well is partly down to Ederson and his ability to slot in and give them an extra player in those circumstances.
Goalkeeping has turned into more than just making saves, players in that position need to do a lot more and Ederson does exactly that. Manchester City won the league title last season, and Ederson played a big part in that success. This season, City have attracted a lot of attention, and many believe they will win the title again, which has made them favourites with the bookmakers. Those getting involved and using new betting sites offers to bet on the Premier League will be hoping they repeat the feat and win again.
Alisson – Liverpool
Another new style goalkeeper who really helps his team with their style, as well as being a great stopper of the ball. It is fair to say that Alisson has made a few errors in the past and that has been noticed by fans, but he seems a lot more settled in Liverpool now and has shown his quality time and time again.
When Liverpool won the Premier League title in 2020, Alisson was excellent and played a big part in that success. He wasn’t as good last season, but a big year is expected, and if he gets back to the top form we have seen in the past from him then that certainly enhances Liverpool’s title chances.
Kasper Schmeichel – Leicester City
When your dad is the great Peter Schmeichel, it seems inevitable that you are going to be a goalkeeper, and that is exactly what happened to Kasper. The great news for him is that he’s not just being a goalkeeper, but he has developed into a world-class one with Leicester City over the past few years.
The 34-year-old is coming towards the end of his career, but that doesn’t stop him from impressing Premier League fans on a regular basis. There have been times in the past when people have questioned Schmeichel, but he has a great temperament and has always strongly fought on and eventually proved his worth to the Leicester team.
Another big season is expected from the Danish goalkeeper and Leicester know that they won’t have him for too much longer. When that time eventually comes, he will leave big shoes to fill at the club, and leave Leicester with an important decision to make.
Emiliano Martinez – Aston Villa
A season ago, Arsenal sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa for just £20 million. Since then, he’s grown into a legitimate starter for Villa, as well as showing that he is capable of being one of the best in the league on his day.
Villa looked a lot better defensively last season, and that was mainly down to the confidence they have in Martinez, and the form he showed. The £20 million they spent on him looks to be a real bargain, and at just 28, the club will be hoping to have his expertise in goal for many years to come.
Martinez struggled for a long run of games at Arsenal and was never really given a shot to be their number one. He got exactly that at Aston Villa, with the club putting their trust in him and he has certainly repaid that and more.
The test for him is to now repeat that this coming season, but don’t be surprised if he does because Emiliano Martinez has the ability to be one of the best keepers in the Premier League.
