Sunderland midfielder Luke O’Nien has signed a new three-year deal which will keep him at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2024. O’Nien has made over 120 appearances for the Black Cats since signing from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018, scoring 11 goals and becoming a firm fans’ favourite.

O’Nien Delighted With New Deal
Speaking to the club website about the new contract, O’Nien said: “I’m delighted to sign a new contract with Sunderland. I’d like to thank Lee Johnson and Kristjaan Speakman, and the owner and the staff, for putting their trust in me and enabling me to continue to play for this great club. Hearing their plans for the club and how they want to develop me personally was incredibly exciting and I can’t wait to get going again.”
Head coach Lee Johnson added: “We are all delighted that Luke has re-signed for the club. He is a great character around the place and he’s perfect for the type of culture that we want to create, as well as being a very versatile and quality player – and one we hope can help us strive for the next level.”
A Key Player
O’Nien has been with Sunderland since their time back in the third-tier began three years ago. In that period, he has featured in several positions due to injuries, playing much of last season either as a right-back or as a centre-back. The 26-year-old, though, has performed admirably wherever he has been asked to.
Across his time with Sunderland, he has also scooped numerous awards, including the club’s Supporters’ Young Player of the Year in his first season, the 2020 North East Football Writers’ Association Personality of the Year, and a selection in the 2020/21 League One Team of the Season.
He has also been part of team success with Sunderland, having helped them to the final of the EFL Trophy last March where they lifted the cup after a 1-0 success over Tranmere Rovers.
Born in Hemel Hempstead, O’Nien started his career with Watford and had a loan spell at Wealdstone before moving on to Wycombe, and then subsequently Sunderland.
