Development at Elland Road
Similar to his Leeds teammates, Roberts’ career has developed impressively while Bielsa has been in charge.
The 22-year-old joined the club in January 2018 for a fee in the region of £2.5 million. However, due to injury it would not be until the following season that he would make his debut for the Yorkshire side.
Roberts enjoyed a successful season with the club, despite them falling short in the Championship play-off semi-finals; he scored three goals and registered five assists during Bielsa’s first campaign.
The Welshman has been used in a variety of positions during the Argentine’s time with the club. Roberts has been utilised as an attacking midfielder, but has also been able to operate as a forward, from out wide or even from a deeper central midfield role.
However, the former West Bromwich Albion man may be used as a squad player this season. He made 13 of his 27 appearances in the Premier League from the bench last season, and with Leeds facing a second campaign in the Premier League, he may see his minutes on the pitch decrease.
What Was Said?
Speaking about his new contract to the Leeds United website, Roberts said: “To be rewarded and go into the future with this club is definitely a proud moment for me and a great feeling.
“Last season was a season full of ups, nobody outside of our team and Leeds expected us to do that well really.
“There was a lot of talk before the season about how our style wouldn’t work and what was going to happen, but the boys were great and we kept at it, we have a great manager who trusts in the way that we play and it showed in our performances this season.
“It was great to be a part of it, playing in the big games and battling with the best, was a great experience.”
Although Roberts started his career further up the pitch, he struggled for goals last season, registering just the once as Leeds finished ninth in the Premier League.
That goal came against Southampton in their final away game of the season, and Roberts is hoping to improve that tally.
“It was nice to get that monkey off my back, a little bit later than I expected, but I finally got there.
“Next season I’m looking to kick on and keep getting into those areas.
“I want to get more goals and become an even more important part of the team.
“I’m excited to see the fans back in the stadium next season, I’ll be working hard to make sure I’m at my best and to show them even more than I have.”
