Wolverhampton Wanderers are seeking potential candidates to replace Nuno Espirito Santo due to ‘concerns’ that the Wolves’ manager will leave this summer to take the Tottenham Hotspur job, reports Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail. The club are reportedly looking for a Nuno Espirito Santo successor just in case.
Wolves Already Looking for Nuno Espirito Santo Successor
Shortlist Includes Former Jose Mourinho Assistant
Having been with the club since 2017, Nuno Espirito Santo has excelled at Wolves and is hugely popular at the club. He is in no danger of being forced out of his role, despite a drop-off in performance this season.
Santo earned a promotion to the Premier League in his first season at the club and led Wolves to two seventh-place finishes on the bounce thereafter. He brought his side to the Europa League quarter-finals in 2020.
The Portuguese is expected to be targeted by Tottenham this summer after Jose Mourinho’s dismissal. He had previously been linked with Arsenal before Mikel Arteta took over.
Due to the incredible results that Nuno Espirito Santo has had with Wolves, the club has ‘concerns’ he will move on this summer and have started drafting plans to move the club forward should his departure occurs and a successor is needed.
Wolves Focus on Mendes in Search for Nuno Espirito Santo Successor
Manager’s the club is targeting includes former Porto boss Vitor Pereira. He has most recently managed in China and has not managed in Europe since a short spell with Olympiacos in 2015.
Rui Faria is another name drafted by Wolves as a candidate to become the successor of Nuno Espirito Santo should they need one, despite having not managed a professional side except a year with Al-Duhail. He is best known for being Jose Mourinho’s assistant coach at every club Mourinho managed from 2002 until Mourinho was sacked as Manchester United manager at the end of 2018.
Bruno Lage, who was Benfica’s manager until June 2020 is another candidate reportedly being considered by the club.
Each potential successor shares a connection with ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes, who has worked closely with Wolves and Nuno Espirito Santo in recent years to bring several players to Molineux.
The Midlands club seems focused on continuing the connection it has shared with the agent. Many of the club’s key players are clients of Mendes.
