Swansea City, Brentford and Queens Park Rangers all secured convincing wins in Championship gameweek 41 – a comparatively free-scoring weekend.
Championship Gameweek 41: Swansea City, Brentford and Queens Park Rangers Star
Swansea City Return to Winning Ways in Style
Swansea put an end to a run of four consecutive losses with a dominant performance and subsequent 3-0 result against Millwall.
Andre Ayew‘s curling effort opened the scoring for The Swans moments before half-time, after both sides had opportunities to score. Jamal Lowe added a second just 15 minutes from time, finishing off a swift counter-attacking move expertly. Lowe doubled his tally and sealed the three points for the promotion-chasers with five minutes to go, hammering in from 15 yards after a clever turn in the area.
Swansea remain ten points off Watford in the chase for the all-important second spot, but still possess a game in hand on the high-flying Hornets. Defeat for Millwall seemingly eliminates any chance they may have had in securing a play-off spot and will now turn their attention to next season’s preparation.
Bees Hit Preston For Five to Star in Championship Gameweek 41
Brentford ended a run of four straight draws with an emphatic 5-0 away win at Preston North End – a result that keeps the Bees in contention for the decisive second spot.
Bryan Mbeumo fired the visitors into an early ninth-minute lead before Marcus Forss tapped in a second just before the 30-minute mark. Ivan Toney had to wait until the 75th minute to get onto the scoresheet when he nodded in Tarique Fosu’s floated cross. The division’s top scorer turned provider for the fourth after he had latched onto a quick free-kick before teeing up Sergi Canos for an easy tap-in. Emiliano Marcondes added a fifth in stoppage time, slotting past Daniel Iversen to complete the scoring and send out a clear message that the Bees still mean business.
Brentford remain nine points off Watford in second, but possess a game in hand on them and also host the Bees on the penultimate game of the season. For Preston, perhaps labelling them as relegation candidates is not quite just, but they will need to certainly need to pick up points from somewhere.
Queens Park Rangers Deal Sheffield Wednesday Another Big Blow
Queens Park Rangers made it five wins from their last eight, with a comfortable 4-1 win over a Sheffield Wednesday side who would have travelled with confidence after their 5-0 thrashing of Cardiff City last week.
Lyndon Dykes nodded the hosts into a 27th-minute lead before Josh Windass finished off a well-worked passing move to level the score once more just three minutes later. Stefan Johansen‘s deflected effort restored QPR’s lead five minutes into the second half, with Dykes doubling his tally and his team’s advantage ten minutes later. The visitors pushed hard for a late comeback, but Chris Willock sealed the three points in stoppage time in clinical fashion.
QPR still sit 12 points from the play-offs with a game in hand, but their focus will be on setting themselves up for a potential top-six push next season. For Sheffield Wednesday, time is running out. They are now seven points from safety with a mere six games left to play.
