Dele Alli Scores Overhead Kick as Spurs Progress in Europe League

Excellent Performance by Dele Against Wolfsberger

There’s hope for Dele at Spurs yet, after an impressive performance.

Dele opened the scoring in the tenth minute with an audacious overhead kick. Matt Doherty fizzed a ball in, which Dele controlled before improvising a sensational effort into the left-hand side. It was a moment of brilliance and a sign of Dele getting back to his best.

His good work continued in the second half.

He swung in a measured cross to put one on a plate for Carlos Vinicius‘ first of the evening. The Brazilian headed the cross down well and into the bottom right corner in the 50th minute.

Gareth Bale got in on the scoring act, rushing on to Dele’s pass to crash home in the 73rd minute.

Can Dele Do it?

Team-mate Eric Dier, as well as boss Mourinho were quick to praise Dele’s performance.

Dier said: “Step by step he’s [Dele] getting back to his best.” (BT Sport Interview).

Mourinho said: “An artistic goal, he can do it, but that work, that continuity in the performance, makes me really happy.”

The question still remains as to whether Dele can replicate this kind of form in the Premier League, rather than the lowest-ranked side left in the Europa League.

Before Dele gets a run in the league, he’ll have to battle against an in-form Spurs front line.

Bale, having scored on the night and in his last Premier League match, is likely to be in contention. Harry Kane is certain to start with Son Heung-Min.

Lucas Moura, a later second-half substitute against Wolfsberger, will be fresh and raring to continue his run in the Spurs line-up.

Mourinho Rotates Squad

Jose Mourinho is rotating his squad well by getting Dele back to his old self. Even if Dele does not start at the weekend, he’ll play an important role off the bench with his new-found form.

Once the game was well and truly won, Mourinho gave a debut to Nile John and another appearance for Dane Scarlett, who showed great tenacity to tackle the Wolfsberger defender and tee up Vinicius for a second goal.

Commenting after the match, Mourinho said that Scarlett is a ‘diamond’ and a ‘fantastic player’ who will be involved in the first team squad from next season.
