As Tottenham Hotspur continue their ruinous form, sacking Jose Mourinho could come at a great cost.
A Bola has speculated that the club might have to pay almost €40m (~£34.8m) to fire Mourinho in outstanding wages.
This is because the Spurs boss does not have a break clause in his contract (The Athletic).
Jose Mourinho Sacking Would Be Costly
Tottenham in Trouble
In the last six games, Spurs have won only one match- the 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion– which fleetingly promised to lift them out of a losing rut.
But since losses to Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea, Spurs crashed out of the FA Cup and then lost against Premier League leaders Manchester City.
These mounting defeats and disappointments have sparked discussions around candidates to replace Mourinho in the case of a sacking.
Latest Mourinho Replacement Rumours
Julian Naglesmann has “admirers at Tottenham”, according to The Athletic. The RB Leipzig manager was linked with the club after Pochettino’s sacking. In terms of style, he fits the bill with attractive, attacking football and a high press.
Brendan Rodgers is another potential candidate, rumoured in the Daily Mail. Again, he was linked with the Spurs job post-Pochettino.
Rodger’s Leicester City side is 10 points above Spurs at the moment. In December, Rodger triumphed for the first time over Mourinho, with a 2-0 victory thanks to Jamie Vardy’s penalty and Toby Alderweireld’s own goal.
Verdict
Mourinho’s style of football can rarely be pleasing to watch. Relying on pouncing on mistakes and a cast-iron defence, the only real joy is in the sporadic counter-attacks.
For a lot of Spurs fans, this style does not fit into the club’s DNA. Criticisms of the manager were relatively less virulent when Tottenham topped the Premier League. But when the boring football does not provide results, it is untenable.
The sluggishness, the individual errors and the misfiring moments were symptomatic not just of Mourinho’s reign, but of Pochettino’s before him.
Sacking Pochettino has not yet fixed the weakness in this Spurs side. Sacking Jose Mourinho now would be to throw the club back into the chaos of transition.
For now, there is a league cup final to look ahead to, as well as the latter stages of the Europa League. There is still plenty of time left to correct things in the Premier League.
