Shrewsbury Town have confirmed that they have parted company with manager Sam Ricketts.
The former Welsh international departs after almost two years in charge.
Sam Ricketts Leaves Shrewsbury Town
Poor Start to the Season
A poor start to the season has left the Shrews sitting 23rd in League One, with just one win from their opening 13 games.
A 2-2 draw with MK Dons proved to be the nail in the coffin for the 39-year-old. Shrewsbury took the lead inside the first minute through Shaun Whalley, before former Bournemouth winger Marc Pugh doubled their lead five minutes into the second half. However, that lead was surrendered; Carlton Morris clawed one back for the hosts before Cameron Jerome made the scores level midway through the second half.
The game capped off what has been a miserable and dire season so far for the Shrews. Late goals and a failure to hold onto a lead has been the tale throughout – their previous two games against Swindon and Ipswich Town saw them drop points in the 93rd and 97th minute retrospectively.
Ricketts was in charge for a total of 96 matches during his time with the club, winning 28 of them.
Search for New Manager to Begin Straight Away
In a statement on the club website, Shrewsbury acknowledged the work done by Ricketts and confirmed that the search for his replacement would begin straight away.
It read: “Shrewsbury Town Football Club can confirm this morning that the Club has parted company with Manager Sam Ricketts and Assistant Manager Dean Whitehead.
“The Club would like to place on record our thanks and acknowledge their hard work and dedication to STFC and the community and wish them all the best in the future.
“The search for a new Manager will begin straight away and the Club will aim to find the right candidate as soon as possible.”
