Chris Smalling hasn’t had the easiest ride since his return to Manchester United during the off-season and it looked as though a move away would materialise for him, but the latest reports are claiming there are no deals in place and that he could end up staying at Old Trafford.
Chris Smalling Currently Looking Likely to Stay at Manchester United
Smalling Spent Time on Loan at Roma
The defender spent last season on loan at Roma, where he became a prominent player for the Italian team. Featuring 30 times (and with three goals too) he made a name for himself in Serie A and the club were eager to bring him back to them.
It looked increasingly likely that he would seal this switch back to Italy but the latest word from BBC Sport’s Simon Stone is that a move isn’t currently happening. There is no bid or offer on the table and there are currently no ongoing talks to send Smalling to Roma either on loan or permanently.
Yet to Play for the Red Devils This Season
Since returning to England, the 30-year-old has yet to feature for current club United during this campaign. In addition, he has also been left out of each squad and hasn’t even been training with the first-team – all signs that he is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Despite clearly not being wanted, it looks like he could be set to stay with United for the foreseeable future. He can’t secure any type of move back to Roma until January once the transfer window closes tonight and it would leave him in limbo with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Chris Smalling Started Out at Fulham
Having broken onto the scene with Fulham as a 19-year old back in 2009/10, he was quickly snapped up by United, a team he has played for ever since.
He’s won two Premier League titles with the club, his first coming during his first full season at the club as a 20-year old, where he featured 15 times.
Smalling has accumulated over 200 appearances for the Red Devils during his time there and, for the time being, it looks like that is where he will remain for now.
