Story So Far

Whelan left Manchester United to join Watford in 2019 after a disappointing loan spell at Port Vale.

The spell at Port Vale was not necessarily disappointing for reasons that Whelan could control. Whatever happened, Whelan did not make an appearance for the club, ending up stuck in the reserves. Whether he had any chance of a breakthrough at United at that time, will probably never be known.

Upon his arrival at Watford, he was signed for their development squad. Though, he did make his senior debut for them. Debuting from the bench against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup, a 3-3 draw. He made his full debut for the replay, however, they lost 2-1 after extra time.

The 21-year-old midfielder will be looking to kick on in League Two with Oldham.

Familiar Faces

Former Manchester United teammates Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Zak Dearnley will help him settle in at Boundary Park.

Looking Forward to It

“I’ve been in a few weeks and from my first day really I knew it was Oldham I wanted to be at,” Whelan told Oldham Athletic’s club website.

“I pride myself on my technical ability, I’m comfortable on the ball and like to create chances.

“I’ve spoken to Harry (Kewell) at length and he’s told me the style of play he wants to play and it fits my game perfectly, so I’m really looking forward to giving my all for this club as there is a lot of quality in the team.”

Former Leeds United and Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell replaced Dino Maamria as Oldham Athletic boss at the beginning of August.

He will be looking to build on last season’s 19th place finish.
