Newcastle United are the latest club to show interest in Oxford United defender, Rob Dickie, according to Alan Nixon at The Sun.

In-Demand U’s Defender Targeted by the Magpies

Rob Dickie has been in demand for some time, and is one of the most sought after centre-backs in the Football League.

Numerous Championship clubs have shown interest in the 24-year-old. Last month, Nottingham Forest were leading the race, with rivals Derby County, Fulham and Dickie’s former club, Reading, all looking to land the defender.

Championship winners Leeds United and playoff winners Fulham also declared an interest in the former England U19 defender.

However, according to the report, Newcastle will be the first team to submit a bid. Premier League rivals Burnley and Southampton reportedly showed interest last season, but didn’t make an offer. The report by Nixon suggests that the Magpies are willing to part with £2 million for the Oxford man.

Transfer Fee

As one of the U’s most standout performers since his arrival from Reading in January 2018, the club will be looking for a significant transfer fee for the defender.

Obviously, there isn’t any shortage in interest for the 24-year-old, but the figures in question may be rebuffed. However, Dickie only has one year on his current contract. That, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic, could leave the U’s with little option but to accept a lower offer.

Last season, Dickie turned out 49 times as the U’s ended the season in fourth, before losing out in the League One play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers. Oxford also reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and took Newcastle to a replay in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The defender has made 113 appearances for the U’s, scoring three times and providing five assists. But it’s his ability on the ball that makes him an exciting prospect. Not only is he strong in the air and solid defensively, but he is also strong and confident on the ball, and is comfortable playing out from the back.
