Doncaster Rovers chief executive Gavin Baldwin has told the Doncaster Free Press it will take an ‘exceptional’ offer to sign Ben Whiteman, 24, from the South Yorkshire side.
Baldwin also confirmed they have rejected several bids for the club captain.
Doncaster Rovers Have Rejected Offers for Ben Whiteman
Interest in Whiteman Was Expected
Ben Whiteman had another strong season for Doncaster Rovers in League One.
The former Manchester United academy midfielder guided the club to a solid ninth-place finish, six points off the play-off spots, with a game in hand. The season was ended prematurely and we will never know if they would have reached the play-offs, as they did 12 months earlier.
He is an important member of the team and many are aware that interest from teams better positioned than Doncaster exists.
Doncaster Will Not Stand in His Way
“We’ve had calls but all of them have been turned down,” Baldwin revealed.
“We’ve had written offers and the board have turned them down.
“The board’s position is that it would have to be an exceptional offer to make it happen.
“They totally understand that if Ben was offered progression that was unbelievable, we’re not the sort of club that would want to stand in his way.
“Having said that, it has to be a case with the financials that (manager) Darren (Moore) sits down and says he can improve the team with the money.
“The offers have not given us the ability to do that so they have been turned down.
Doncaster Resisted Offers Last Summer
Doncaster also resisted bids for Whiteman last summer.
It is understood more than 12 clubs have been tracking the former Sheffield United man over the last year.
Local rivals Sheffield United will receive a percentage of the transfer fee, should Whiteman leave Doncaster Rovers.
