West Ham United manager David Moyes has outlined his desire to add to his squad during the upcoming transfer window.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, Moyes explained how the Hammers will have to stick with the current squad if no new players can be brought in.

David Moyes Wants to Add to West Ham Squad

Moyes: ‘We’ll Try and Get the Best Out of Players’

During his post-match interview after West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa yesterday, Moyes spoke about the club’s expensive spending in the past. As a result, he believes it may be a case of improving the current squad, as opposed to bringing new players in.

Moyes said: “I think you have got to remember that the club spent £200 million [recently]. We’ll try and add to it if we can if we can’t we’ll go with what we’ve got and there are a lot who can improve and a lot who have since lockdown, Micky Antonio is an example of that. We’ll try and get the best out of the players and if we can add to it we will do.”

The 57-year-old manager also spoke about the difficulty of concluding transfer deals early in the window. He said: “I don’t think that will happen, as much as ideally everybody would like it to but I don’t think the market will play out that way. I may be wrong and if you look at the history of the markets, all of the things go on during the last day of the transfer market, yellow ties and all that stuff.”

‘Attention’ Towards Declan Rice

If Moyes is to get the best out of his current squad, he must keep England midfielder Declan Rice.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a successful campaign with the Hammers this year. He made 38 appearances for West Ham, making three assists and scoring a goal. Rice also took the armband on five occasions, demonstrating the midfielder’s importance to the club.

Speaking on Rice’s future, Moyes told Sky Sports: “He’s under contract and he’s going on holiday as far as I know, hopefully, he’ll be selected for England as well and he’ll be back with us for pre-season in three weeks. Declan should have attention because he is such a good player. But, he’s not going anywhere unless you get one of those steel vans that have the cash in it? You better bring one of them.”
