AC Milan will host Atlanta in a crucial Serie A fixture tonight. Milan are still in danger of failing to qualify for European football next season. They enter this match in sixth place, which is a Europa League qualifying position. Close behind are Napoli, with just three points separating the two clubs. Right ahead of Milan are AS Roma, who have a two-point advantage in fifth place.
Atalanta are looking to hold onto second place in Serie A. They have been in terrific form as of late and have recorded at least a point in every single one of their last 15 league matches.
AC Milan Look to Avenge December’s 5-0 Loss to Atalanta
Stefano Pioli’s First Match After Signing Extension
Stefano Pioli will remain at the helm of AC Milan until at least 2022. He signed the contract extension on Thursday which leads to an interesting storyline entering this match. Last time out against Atalanta, Milan fell 5-0 in a humiliating loss.
If Pioli can help guide Milan to all three points in the second meeting of the season against Atalanta, it will help signal that he is the right man for the job moving forward. A loss would certainly put a damper on the contract extension.
Atalanta’s Title Hopes are Not Over Yet
Juventus’ 2-1 loss to Udinese has left them with a six-point lead over Atalanta entering Matchday 36. This, of course, means Atalanta still have a chance to shock the world and dethrone Juventus. It’s going to be a tall order to do so but they will need to get all three points in this match if they have any chance of taking the title race down to the last day.
Atalanta have put together a tremendous season thus far and are closing in 100 goals scored in a single season. Another five-goal performance against Milan would see them reach this milestone.
This should one of the best matches of the weekend in Serie with so much on the line for both clubs.
