Chelsea are ready to pay Dean Henderson more than twice his current wage in an attempt to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Chelsea have already contacted the Manchester United goalkeeper’s representatives over a permanent transfer. He is one of a number of goalkeepers linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this Summer.
Henderson has had an incredible breakout season this year with European spot-chasing Sheffield United. The 23-year-old has impressed many this season, and currently has 13 clean sheets going into the final weekend of the season.
Chelsea Willing to More Than Double Dean Henderson Wage
Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Fiasco
The Daily Star claim that Chelsea have major interest in the England youth international, and are looking at him to replace the out of favour Kepa Arrizabalaga. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper has failed to impress Chelsea boss Frank Lampard. However, the London side are likely to struggle in finding a buyer. This is a result of his high wages and huge price tag. This value has not been displayed in his performances so far.
Kepa was dropped at the start of the year and has struggled this season under Lampard. Despite having given him another chance and run in the side, the Chelsea boss is far from convinced with the Spaniard. He has kept just ten clean sheets in 40 appearances this season.
United’s Dilemma
Manchester United themselves are having problems with their current number one. David de Gea, one of the club’s most experienced players, has struggled as of late. Two blunders in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend and a number of others throughout the season has left many wondering if the 29-year-old is past his best. Some are questioning whether it’s time to take a punt with Dean Henderson, especially with him impressing over a number of loan spells.
De Gea is sat on £375,000 a week at Old Trafford. He has three years remaining on his current deal which would make him difficult to get rid of. It would also be hard to justify paying someone that much to be a second choice keeper.
Manchester United will look to offer Henderson a new contract to secure his future, regardless of whether he will be at the club next season. His performances this season warrant a new deal. Also, this could be a good way to secure his future at the club and ward of interest from elsewhere. There are more clubs than just Chelsea who want Dean Henderson.
Decision Time for Henderson
The Times have reported that Henderson will look for another loan move unless Manchester United can assure him of an opportunity to compete for the number one spot next season. Henderson will have ambitions of making England’s Euro 2021 squad. He will not achieve these goals if he is not playing regular football and continuing the great form he has displayed this season.
Henderson has featured all throughout the Blades’ incredible season and is not willing to sit on the sidelines at United. He recently informed United of the fact that he will only return to Old Trafford if he is going to be their number one.
Regardless, he still has long-term ambitions of playing for the Red Devils, but he will not wait forever. Especially with offers from a number of clubs which would be more than double his wage, he may continue his career elsewhere.
His successful season has earned him this interest. It is likely United will do all they can to keep hold of him. Many within the club see him as an adequate heir to David de Gea’s thrown.
