Chelsea Academy Graduate Josh Grant Signs for Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers have completed the signing of Chelsea academy graduate Josh Grant on a three-year deal. It comes just a day after the Gas appointed former Chelsea youth coach Jack Mesure as their assistant manager.

EFL Experience

Grant has a good experience of playing in the lower leagues of English football. He joined then-League Two side Yeovil Town on loan for the second half of the 2018/19 season. His debut came the day after signing in a 1-0 win against Mansfield Town. However, he was unable to help the Glovers from dropping down to the National League.

For the 2019/20 season, Grant was once again loaned to League Two, linking up with Ryan Lowe’s Plymouth Argyle. He made 22 appearances in the first half of the season, enough to have played a considerable part in the Pilgrims’ promotion back to League One.

In addition to his EFL experience, Grant has also played in the England youth set-up, featuring for the U18s, the U20s (where he was part of the squad that won the Toulon Tournament) and the U21s.

Garner Excited to Land Talent

Rovers manager Ben Garner was clearly delighted to land this talented defender, telling the club website: “We’re very excited to get Josh in, he’s had a really good education and upbringing at Chelsea through their academy.

“He is dynamic and has the technical and tactical qualities that we are looking for plus I really like his character and mentality. Josh has the potential to be an excellent signing for us.”

Grant added: “The plan Ben had for me, as an individual and for the club, is what made me want to sign. I think he wants to move forward, he realises where I’m at in my career and I think now is the time for me to kick on and progress as much as I can.”
