Lionel Messi Criticises Barcelona as Real Madrid Capture La Liga

Barcelona Are a Weak Team Says Lionel Messi

Messi equalised from a free-kick just after the hour mark after Barcelona had gone behind in the first half through Jose Arnaiz. However, Barcelona couldn’t capitalise on the equaliser and, although they were down to ten men, Osasuna would get a winner in the fourth minute of injury time.

This loss gave Real Madrid the opportunity to secure their 34th La Liga title if they were to beat Villareal later on in the day. It was an opportunity that they took thanks to two goals from Karim Benzema as they ran out 2-1 winners.

Speaking to Spanish TV after Osasuna’s shock victory, the Argentine said: “We didn’t expect to finish in this way, but it sums up the year for us, we are a weak team who can be beaten with enough intensity and enthusiasm.

“We have lost a lot of points which we shouldn’t have done, we have been very inconsistent.

“We need to be self-critical, starting with the players, but also across the entire club, we are Barcelona, and we are obliged to win every game.”

Barcelona’s Form Since the Restart

Before the season restarted, Barcelona led La Liga by two points; however, since the restart, they have looked flat. Draws against Sevilla, Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid, saw them slip down to second as ‘Los Blancos’ moved into pole position. Yesterday’s loss was their first loss at home since November 2018.

Real capitalised on these draws in a sensational way. They have picked up maximum points since the restart and have gone seven points clear at the top of La Liga.

With Real Madrid being crowned La Liga champions for the first time in three years, Barcelona will now look towards the Champions League. A final against their Spanish rivals could be on the cards if both teams win their respective quarter and semi-finals.
