Sweeney Arrives On A Free Transfer From Barnet
Forest Green announced via their website they had signed the midfielder. The 26 year old arrives on a free transfer and has signed a two-year deal at New Lawn.
Sweeney began his career at AFC Wimbledon before being released by the London club. The midfielder made his name in non-league with the likes of Kingstonian, Dulwich Hamlet and Maidstone United.
His impressive performances earned him a move to then Football League side Barnet. Since joining Barnet, Sweeney has clocked up over 100 appearances and captained the side.
Sweeney is a no-nonsense, hardworking midfield player. He is athletic, strong and a difficult player to get past. He will add some much-needed steel to the Forest Green midfield.
Barnet’s loss is Forest Green’s gain as they look to sustain a promotion charge in the new season. Mark Cooper’s side endured a tough season after starting brightly. Sweeney’s arrival highlights Forest Green’s plans to improve their squad for the new season.
Speaking about his move, Sweeney said “I’m excited about being given the chance to prove myself in the Football League again and working with the manager and the team.
“I’m looking forward to getting started, just as soon as we get the green light for the new season.”
Director of Football Richard Hughes added “There was considerable interest in Dan this summer, so we’re delighted to bring him to The New Lawn.
“He’s a strong, powerful and athletic player, who we know will fit right in with our squad.”
