Gary Neville: Manchester United Need More Signings to Compete

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville believes the squad at Old Trafford is improving, but stresses they still need more if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

Gary Neville: Manchester United Still Need Three or Four

Likeable Team

Ahead of the 3-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, Gary Neville told Sky Sports the current side is becoming more likeable than in previous times.

“This team is a lot more likeable than the one which was here two years ago when you thought Manchester United’s recruitment had lost direction.”

It’s easy to see where he’s coming from.

With a player like Harry Maguire leading from the back and Bruno Fernandes having such an impact, there is a growing number of characters in the team – something United have lacked for some time.

Both players joined this season, which also proves the Red Devils’ recruitment no longer lacks direction.

More Needed Still

“But I would urge some caution,” Neville added.

“Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League. They have a squad which is improving with young players. But there is still some work to be done in the transfer market to get this team to a title-winning team – which has to be Manchester United’s ambition.”

“There is more needed and a lot more needed: Three or four players of high quality of the Bruno Fernandes type to get them to the point where they can challenge.”

Manchester United now sit fifth after that victory over Brighton.

They remain 34 points behind Liverpool, who have already been crowned champions. The reality is, whether Manchester United are 15 games unbeaten or not, that is what they’re aiming to be in the long run.

They don’t want to get stuck in the rut of chasing Champions League football year-after-year and that becoming enough. It’s not enough for a club of Manchester United’s level and is never going to be.
