Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be staying with Roma on a permanent deal next season, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Armenian midfielder has spent the season with the Italian side on loan from Arsenal. However, having seen limited playing time at the Gunners prior to his loan move, they have seen fit to ship out Mkhitaryan permanently.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Leave Arsenal and Join Roma on Permanent Deal
Disappointing Time in England
Thirty-one-year-old Mkhitaryan arrived in England with much promise after his move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2016. His time in Germany, and previously in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk, had been a success and big things were expected of him.
However, he spent just a year-and-a-half with United and made only 39 Premier League appearances in that time. He notched five goals in that spell too, a disappointing return for a player that promised much more.
The move to Arsenal was meant to revitalise his career, but again that did not occur. He played the same number of league matches for both United and Arsenal, and only added a further eight goals to his overall tally in England’s top flight while with the Gunners.
The Armenian’s debut for Roma went well, scoring against Sassuolo. His spell with Roma, though, has been stop-start due to injuries. According to Transfermarkt, he has missed 16 matches across three different spells on the sidelines this season.
Despite this, he has still been able to contribute six goals in 15 matches, meaning he scored a goal every 0.4 games as opposed to every 0.12 games at Manchester United and every 0.20 games at Arsenal.
This has been enough to convince Roma to make the move permanent and it could be an excellent chance for Mkhitaryan to recover a lost career as it moves into its latter stages.
