REPORT: Manchester United After Another Striker

Speaking at his pre-match press conference before Manchester United’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested that Manchester United are in the market for another striker this summer.

United sold Romelu Lukaku last season without bringing in a direct replacement while Anthony Martial has spent most of this season playing down the middle. He has been in excellent form, scoring a hat-trick against Sheffield United in their last Premier League game.

Martial and Marcus Rashford have notched 19 goals between them this season.

What Was Said?

Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic posted Solskjaer’s quotes on Twitter.

The Norwegian said: “You need competition for places at Man United. If you think you’ve got a divine right to be playing every game and are doing so well that we’re not going to look for players to replace you, you’re in the wrong place.

“I’ve been here myself for so many years as a striker, and then Teddy Sheringham comes in, Dwight Yorke comes in, Ruud Van Nistelrooy comes in, Wayne Rooney comes in. We’ve always got to look at improving and if they don’t improve, we might have to look somewhere else.

“We have to be better. We’re too far away from where we need to be and want to be.”

Options in the Market

Despite missing out on both Erling Haaland and Timo Werner, United are still optimistic about bringing in a striker this summer.

The two players most likely to be on their list this summer are Moussa Dembele and Raul Jimenez.

According to further reports, United have already agreed a deal for Dembele. This will see them pay €70 million for the striker. The Frenchman has scored 16 goals in 27 games before the season was ended due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Lyon look set to cash in on the striker because they will miss out on European football next season.

Jimenez has also been linked with the club. He has 15 goals in 32 games for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season, however, his price tag has reportedly been set at £90 million, so United might prefer the Dembele option due to age and price tag that has been set.
