Burnley defender Phil Bardsley has signed a new one-year deal at the club. The 34-year-old’s contract was due to expire this summer and he was one of a group of players the club were waiting for decisions from. However, he has now agreed to extend his stay at Turf Moor which will make him available for the rest of this season as well as the 2020/21 campaign.
Burnley Defender Phil Bardsley Signs New Deal
Sixth Squad Member to Sign On
Bardsley has made 53 appearances for Burnley since joining from Stoke City in 2017. The experienced defender has started 14 Premier League matches for the Clarets this season and had a good spell in the team before the season was suspended due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
He follows Charlie Taylor, Nick Pope, Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes and Robbie Brady in committing to the club for next season. Midfielder Ashley Westwood will also be staying after a one-year option in his contract was triggered.
Quartet to Leave
Departures for Joe Hart and Aaron Lennon were expected after reports emerged late last week that they would not be kept on.
Back-up goalkeeper Adam Legzdins will also be leaving. He failed to make a single appearance for the club after joining from Birmingham City in 2017.
The biggest blow for Burnley is that they have failed to agree a new deal with midfielder Jeff Hendrick. The Republic of Ireland international joined from Derby County in 2016 and has been a consistently good performer either in the centre or on the right of midfield for Sean Dyche’s side.
In total, Hendrick made 122 appearances for Burnley in the Premier League, scoring nine times. Two of those goals came in his 24 appearances this season, while he also found the net in the 4-2 win over League One side Peterborough United in the FA Cup.
