Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella has left the club to join Ligue 1 side FC Nantes. The midfielder ends his seven-year spell with the Reds in which he made a handful of appearances for the Reds.
Pedro Chirivella Leaves Liverpool
Nantes announced via their website they had signed the Spanish midfielder. Chirivella arrives on a free transfer signing a contract until the summer of 2023.
Chirivella becomes Nantes’ first major signing since the French transfer window opened on Monday.
The midfielder joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of 16 and signed his first professional contract in 2015. His senior debut came in a Europa League tie against Nantes rivals Bordeaux.
Despite only being 23, Chirivella brings plenty of experience having spent time out on loan. Chirivella has spent time in Holland playing for Willem II and Go-Ahead Eagles. His most recent loan spell was with Spanish Segunda side Extremadura.
Chirivella has spent this season playing in the Liverpool U23 side captaining the team on several occasions. The Spanish midfielder featured in 12 matches, scoring once, and assisting twice. Chirivella has also made several appearances this season for the senior side featuring six times in the cup competitions.
He joins a Nantes side looking to progress following a 13th place finish in Ligue 1 prior to the abandonment of the league. Christian Gourcuff has been actively sorting his squad since the season concluded with a permanent deal tied up for playmaker Moses Simon.
Pedro Chirivella Never Fulfilled His Potential at Liverpool
When Chirivella arrived in 2013, there was plenty of excitement surrounding the midfielder. However, he never quite managed the breakthrough to the senior side on a regular basis.
A handful of league and cup appearances proves his future lies elsewhere. A move to Nantes offers Chirivella the perfect opportunity to showcase his best qualities. He will leave Liverpool with a heavy heart but, will certainly be excited for a new challenge with the Ligue 1 side.
