TSG 1899 Hoffenheim Sack Manager Alfred Schreuder

Hoffenheim have sacked manager Alfred Schreuder after less than a year in the role. Schreuder was a trusted assistant to Julen Naglesmann before being given the top job once Naglesmann departed for RB Leipzig.

However, both the club and Schreuder have agreed to go their separate ways despite Hoffenheim sitting in seventh place and on course for a Europa League place.

Schreuder Departs With Four Games Still To Play

Hoffenheim announced via their website Schreuder had left the club. The Dutchman leaves after less than a year in the role.

Schreuder had been with the club since 2015 having arrived as Naglesmann’s number two before being given the top job in July 2019. Schreuder’s departs Hoffenheim seventh in the Bundesliga with four matches remaining. His final match was a 2-2 all draw with struggling Fortuna Dusseldorf.

He leaves with the second-best win rate as Hoffenheim manager, topped only by Naglesmann.

Speaking to the Hoffenheim website about Schreuder’s departure, managing director Peter Gorlich said: “Alfred stabilised the team after the upheaval last summer and established it in the upper mid-table.

“In a season that will go down in the history books as one of the most extraordinary seasons of the Bundesliga, not least due to the Corona crisis”

Director of football Alexander Mosen added: “We had different views on important detailed issues, meaning that cooperation beyond the end of the season no longer makes sense.”

Hoffenheim Chief Executive Frank Briel further added: “We would like to thank Alfred for the work he has done and for the amicable solution that we have now reached.”

Schreuder Grateful For The Opportunity

Alfred Schreuder also noted a few words as he departed Hoffenheim. Speaking to their website, Schreuder said: “From the very beginning, I was aware that the task at Hoffenheim would be a major challenge.

“The work has filled me with great joy. I would like to thank the club for giving me the chance to work in the Bundesliga.

“Unfortunately, we could not agree on a common path to lead TSG into the future. I regret this development.

“However, it is not unusual to have differences of opinion in professional life. You then have to be honest with each other and draw the appropriate conclusions.”

Where Next For Hoffenheim?

Hoffenheim still have four matches to play as the Bundesliga nears its conclusion following the extended break.

The club have confirmed the current coaching staff in place will oversee the remaining matches as they look to secure a European spot for next season. Matthias Kaltenbach, Michael Rechner and Timo Gross will take charge of the remaining matches.

Their first game in charge home game against RB Leipzig on Friday night.

The club have also announced Marcel Rapp and former Hoffenheim player Kai Herdling will join the temporary coaching set up. The club’s director of football Alexander Mosen will also take a more advanced role with the team.

The club will begin their search for a new manager once the season finishes at the end of June.
