REPORT: Erik ten Hag Confirms Andre Onana Can Leave Ajax This Summer
Statements
Andre Onana has affirmed his intentions to move on.
“Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy with Ajax and I am very grateful to the club,” said Onana. “It was five great years here. But now my time has come to take a step. We made that appointment last year. I do not yet know what will happen, but my ambitions and agreements are clear” (Translated from the Dutch, AD).
Erik ten Hag has made his position clear; Ajax prefer not to lose him.
“Andre is very important to us, of course we don’t want to lose him,” says Erik ten Hag. “But it is true that agreements were made last year. About the development picture and a possible step if the right club and price comes along. As far as I know, no concrete offer has been made to Ajax. ”
Suitors for Andre Onana
Barcelona
There has been an ongoing rumour mill as to potential suitors for Onana. One potential destination is Barcelona. Onana spent five years at the Barcelona youth academy before joining Ajax. He told Canal+ Afrique in an earlier interview: “It’s hard to say because with FC Barcelona, I am still in very good relations with the president, the coaches.
“As I said earlier, Barca is my home. If I have to go back, I will go back.”
“I only take care of the ball game, what happens at the stadium. The rest are my agents who manage.” (Translated from the French, via the Mirror).
Premier League
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are two other clubs rumoured to want the Cameroonian ‘keeper. The Blues are considering replacing Kepa Arizzabalaga. Alasdair Gold has played down any potential deal for Onana. In a video Q&A, he suspects the club would have looked at Onana. However, he does not expect Hugo Lloris to leave this summer. Thus, with Paulo Gazzaniga at number two, Spurs are not really in the market for yet another top goalkeeper.
