Manchester United are plotting a surprise centre-back swoop for Inter Milan’s Diego Godín, according to Sam Meade of the Mirror.

Manchester United Plotting Surprise Centre-Back Swoop

Looking for a Stable Pairing at the Back

Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are looking for a stable pairing of centre-backs in front of David de Gea.

Although Harry Maguire arrived in the summer for a record fee of £80 million and has now established himself as a terrific defender, the Red Devils have struggled to find a partner for him.

Victor Lindelof has played alongside the Englishman for most of the season, but has been inconsistent, and is not the brilliant central defender they need.

Eric Bailly is now providing the Swedish international with some competition since returning from injury. Although he is very entertaining to watch and a skilled defender, Bailly can be too maverick and is not the stable centre-back Solskjaer wants.

Reigniting Godín Interest

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly decided to reignite his interest in the Uruguayan.

He has previously been linked with United during his time at Atletico Madrid, where he spent nearly the entirety of the last decade. He moved to Inter Milan in the summer of 2019. However, having failed to impress at the San Siro, they may open the door for him to leave despite his contract running until 2022. Solskjaer may be there to snap the 34-year-old up.

With United’s rebuild focusing primarily on youth, the Norwegian currently manages a very inexperienced side, and Godín could be exactly what he needs.

In his career, the former Atleti centre-back has reached two Champions League finals, won the Europa League twice, La Liga once, and even emerged victorious from the Copa America at international level.

With this incredible amount of experience, Godín could help the Red Devils immeasurably, while also providing a stable Maguire partner for a season or two as they fix more pressing matters at Old Trafford.
