Manchester United are historically one of the world’s biggest teams and Champions League football is a necessity for the Red Devils’. While the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has been rather unsuccessful, the majority of the 26 years prior in which he managed were hugely successful. Between the 1991/92 season and the Scott’s retirement, United did not finish below third, and that position only came three times in that 22 campaign period.
In the Champions League, however, they have not had quite so much glory. The Red Devils did have a successful spell in the competition from 2007/08 to 2010/11 by reaching the final three times and winning it once. Since Ferguson’s retirement, United have qualified for the competition just three times. One of these saw them knocked out in the group stages, one the round of 16, and one the quarter-finals. While it has always held its importance, this season more than ever, Champions League qualification is huge for Manchester United.

Manchester United need to qualify for the Champions League this season, with many ways in which they can do it, for multiple reasons.
How Can They Qualify?
With much uncertainty over the future of this Premier League season, there are a few ways United could qualify for the competition.
Should the season be declared null and void, they would likely qualify, having finished fifth last season, due to Manchester City’s European ban. This would also be the outcome if we finish the season with the current standings.
If the Coronavirus situation significantly improves, we could see the Premier League resumed at the beginning of April. From there, qualification would happen like any other season.
This is unlikely, though, and if more of this campaign goes ahead, it is likely to be as a playoff. This will be for Champions League qualification, probably excluding Liverpool due to their incredible lead at the top, and relegation. With United’s excellent record against the big six, this could be a good option for them, however, we are still very unsure as to how this season will conclude.
Why do they Need to Qualify?
Revenue
Although Manchester United are historically one of the richest clubs in the world, they gave a poor financial report in February. Full payment on the transfer of Harry Maguire did not help this, but they still need to be cautious with their money for now. The Champions League provides a large part of many top clubs’ income. Prize money and TV rights both account for a lot of it, and this would help United fund their summer transfer targets.
Attracting Top Players
If United qualify for the Champions League, it would be a massive boost in terms of summer signings, not just financially. Qualification for Europe’s most prestigious club competition could not only persuade players such as Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba to stay at the club, but also convince the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, who have attracted much interest and are facing many options, to move to Manchester.
