Blackpool have confirmed the departure of manager Simon Grayson with immediate effect. The Tangerines are currently 15th in League One and have lost five of their last six games in the third tier.

Struggling for Form

It’s largely been a season of struggle for Blackpool. After finishing 10th last season, they were one of a host of sides who were tipped for potentially challenging for a play-off spot this season, particularly under a manager who is well known for getting teams out of this league.

However, this season has not gone to plan at all, and the final straw was last night’s defeat to Gillingham. Armand Gnanduillet’s early goal gave the hosts the lead, but two goals in three second-half minutes from John Akinde and Regan Charles-Cook had them on the back foot.

Nathan Delfuenso looked to have rescued a point in the first minute of stoppage time, but deep into the same period, Gillingham’s Brandon Hanlan headed home to condemn the Seasiders to yet another defeat.

What Was Said

A short statement on the club website read: “Blackpool Football Club can confirm that Simon Grayson has today been relieved of his duties as first-team manager.

“The club would like to thank Simon for his efforts during his time back at Bloomfield Road and wish him well for the future.

“A further announcement will follow in due course.”

Potential Replacements

Former Leeds United and Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom is the favourite for the job at the moment. His last role came at Scottish side Hibernian, where he was sacked in November.

Also in contention is former Blackpool player Ian Evatt, who is currently top of the National League with Barrow. It’s thought that Evatt would love the chance to manage the club, but whether he would leave Barrow at such an important point in their miraculous season is unclear.
