The Deal

Barnsley announced via their website they had signed the defender. Sollbauer arrives for an undisclosed fee signing an 18-month deal at Oakwell.

The experienced centre half reunites with Barnsley manager Gerhard Struber who has brought Sollbauer from his old club. The Wolfsberger captain brings some much-needed experience to a very young Barnsley defence.

Sollbauer also reunites with Marcel Ritzmaier who joined Barnsley earlier in the transfer window. Ritzmaier has already made a positive impression on Barnsley and Sollbauer will hope to do the same.

The centre half arrives looking to shore up one of the Championship’s most leaky and inexperienced defences. Gerhard Struber knows about his former captain’s qualities and will be confident he can become the leader Barnsley have craved.

The FA Cup fourth-round tie against Portsmouth may come too soon for his debut. He is more likely to make his debut against Charlton at the beginning of February.

What Was Said

Speaking to the Barnsley website about his new signing, Gerhard Struber said: “I know a lot about Michael, and he will be great for the team. He is exactly the player we need.

“He has been captain at Wolfsberger AC for a long time and has plenty of first-team experience at a good level.

“It was important for me to have experience and to add to our defence in this window. I am very happy that Michael is here in Barnsley and I know he will be a positive impact and help us over the next weeks.”

Barnsley’s chief executive Dane Murphy added: “The club are delighted to have completed the purchase of Michael Sollbauer and are excited to see him in a red shirt. As a player and a leader, Michael embodies the qualities that will instantly impact on the first-team squad.”
