Shrewsbury have made their second January signing. The Shrews have signed midfielder Josh Vela on a free transfer after he was released by Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

Shrewsbury announced via their website they had signed the free agent. Vela arrives as the club’s second January recruit signing a two-and-half-year deal at the Montgomery Waters Stadium.

Vela reunites with Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts with the pair having played together at Bolton Wanderers. He is primarily a central midfielder, but Vela has played at right-back during his career.

He was the bright spark for many seasons in a Bolton side which flirted with Championship relegation and League One promotion. However, he struggled to make an impact in Scotland.

He returns to England determined to keep Shrewsbury in the promotion race with the Shrews just seven points off the top six in League One. Vela brings plenty of experience and a quality midfield presence.

Vela could make his Shrewsbury debut this weekend when Liverpool visit the Montgomery Waters Stadium in the FA Cup fourth round.

What Was Said

Speaking to the Shrewsbury website about his move, Vela said “I am delighted to have got the deal over the line. I can’t wait to get started and I’m buzzing to get going. I’ve just met the Chairman and he seems like a lovely guy. I have played here once or twice. It’s a good stadium.

“I would describe myself as an all-action midfielder who likes to get up and down the pitch. I like to get stuck in and hopefully, I can chip in with a few goals”

Vela knows Sam Ricketts well, stating, “I know the Gaffer because I played with him at Bolton. I know what he’s like, he’s an enthusiastic guy and I can’t wait to get going. He’s the one who pushed this through, and I want to play for him.

“I have experience playing in this league with Bolton. I know what it takes to get out of this league so hopefully, I can add that experience and help the team push up the table. The ambition is to get promotion and push the Club forward.”
