Oxford United End Winless Run with James Henry Brace

Oxford United have put a stop to their winless run after Karl Robinson’s side saw off Tranmere Rovers with a 3-0 victory.

James Henry scored twice, with both goals coming from the spot, while Cameron Brannagan netted his fifth goal of the season in the second half.

U’s Record Second League Win

Following a run of four defeats and a draw, Oxford were getting desperate for that elusive win, and it finally came thanks to a brace from Henry and a strike from Brannagan, sinking Tranmere.

Like large parts of the season, the U’s looked controlled in possession and were the better side, but unlike previous games, they were more clinical in front of goal and, more importantly, solid in defence.

The U’s headed into the game with the third-worst defensive record in the league, and after their only previous win over Peterborough United, this was just their second clean sheet.

Henry, who netted a 94th equalising penalty as the U’s came from two goals down to beat Millwall in the second round of the Carabao Cup, successfully converted another double from twelve yards against a pretty lacklustre Rovers side.

Brannagan is currently leading the scoring charts with five goals in all competitions. And, he managed to find the net again midway through the second half, giving Oxford some breathing space as the game began to wither from the visitors.

Back to back wins?

Next weekend, Oxford travel to Bolton Wanderers. This is a side on -11 points and still searching for their first win of the season.

Admittedly, until the last week or so, the club have been in dire straights off the field. However, they have managed to assemble a squad in the hope of retaining their League One status.

That said, the Trotters lost 6-1 at Rotherham, and the U’s will head north almost expecting to secure back to back wins.
