Defensive Problems for Chelsea a Real Cause For Concern

Frank Lampard picked up his first win as Chelsea manager with a 3-2 win over Norwich City. However, once more their defensive frailties were shown, conceding a further two goals. Their defensive problems are a real cause for concern for the Chelsea manager.

Defensive Problems For Chelsea

Easily Beaten

In four competitive games so far this season, Chelsea have conceded nine goals. In comparison to their top six rivals, that simply is not good enough.

The most recognisable problem for Frank Lampard’s side is how easily they are carved open at the back. Simple errors that need to be cut out in order for them to be a successful side. Norwich’s second goal demonstrated this. Kurt Zouma was not aware of where Teemu Pukki was and lost track of the Finnish striker. One simple through ball and Pukki found himself in behind to slot home for his fifth goal of the season.

The same problems were also evident at Old Trafford in their 4-0 humbling by Manchester United. A simple over the top ball by Paul Pogba and a weaving run by Marcus Rashford between two Chelsea defenders lead to the Red Devils third goal on the opening day.

These are problems that a top six side such as Chelsea should not be making. Sides will continue to probe their weaknesses in defence, meaning Frank Lampard needs to eradicate them quickly.

Problem With Having No Strong Leader

Defensive problems at Chelsea were not a problem during the days of John Terry at Stamford Bridge. A strong, natural leader that would keep his defence order and maintain its shape. Frank Lampard is in need of someone similar to his former Chelsea team mate.

That is, of course, no disrespect to current captain Cesar Azpilicueta. However, the Blues were out of line in their win over Norwich. There was no compact shape in defence, or even a hint of one at Carrow Road. Part responsibility of that downfall has to lie with the captain, who needs to stand up for his side.

Chelsea Can Cure Defensive Problems With Replacements

Replacements does not mean transfers. Antonio Rudiger is returning from a spell on the sidelines, and was an accomplished centre-half for Chelsea last season. The German could be the cure for their current defensive problems.

Similarly, although not a defender, N’Golo Kante‘s workhorse like mentality and defensive mindset could benefit Chelsea in the long run. The Frenchman is currently sidelined with an injury, but is expected to be back soon.

Verdict

It is not always an attacking mentality that wins you the Premier League, or even makes you a successful side. Some of the most successful managers have built solid foundations in defence to make them a better side, which is something that Frank Lampard needs to learn. The defensive problems at Chelsea is something that needs to be acted quickly upon.
