Statements

In a statement on the club website, Atletico Madrid said: “Atlético de Madrid and AS Monaco have reached an agreement over the transfer of Gelson Martins. The winger joined his current club on loan on Jan. 27 and will now continue his career in Monaco.

“Gelson arrived at our club from Sporting CP in summer 2018. He played 12 official games and scored a goal for Atleti. He joined AS Monaco on loan in the January window and has now made the move permanent.

“Everybody at Atlético de Madrid wishes him the best of luck in this next step in his career.”

Meanwhile, Monaco said in a statement on their website: “We are very pleased to announce that Gelson remains at AS Monaco. In a few months, Gelson showed a lot of qualities. His skill, vivacity and energy have helped the team and will undoubtedly be valuable assets for the group in the future. We are confident that Gelson will continue to grow and continue to demonstrate his full potential.”

Career So Far

Born on the island of Cape Verde, Martins came through the youth ranks at Sporting CP and featured 40 times for their B team before becoming part of the first team.

Once in the first team, he appeared 92 times, scoring 18 goals. This was enough for him to be picked up by Atletico.

However, he played only eight times for the Madrid side and spent the second half of 2018/19 loaned out to Ligue 1 outfit Monaco, where he has now completed a permanent transfer to.
