The Statement
In a statement, Juventus said: “Massimiliano Allegri will not be on the Juventus bench for the 2019/2020 season.
“The coach and the President, Andrea Agnelli, will meet the media together at tomorrow’s press conference – Saturday 18 May, at 2pm in the press conference hall of Allianz Stadium.”
Career
The Italian coach brings to an end a five-year spell in Turin, having joined from AC Milan in 2014.
He began his managerial career with Aglianese in 2003, spending a season there before moving on to SPAL for the 2004/05 campaign. He then spent two years at Grosseto before having spells at Sassuolo and Cagliari.
Juventus Achievements
In his time at Juventus, Allegri has won five consecutive Serie A titles and four Coppa Italias. This season was the first in which he did not achieve the domestic double.
The big sticking point for La Vecchia Signora has been their lack of success in the Champions League. They twice lost in the final, against Barcelona in 2015 and against Real Madrid in 2017.
This season, Juventus were one of the sides to be shocked by Dutch side Ajax on their run to the semi-finals. They were held to a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam before Erik ten Hag’s side won the tie in Italy.
Next Move
According to reports in the Evening Standard, Allegri was keen on a move to the Premier League when Jose Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United. However, they instead opted to give the job to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Allegri reported to have been on the shortlist.
Allegri was also interested in replacing Arsene Wenger at Arsenal before they moved to appoint Unai Emery. His interest in the Premier League suggests that England could be his next destination should a suitable job arise.
