Delivering Under Pressure
Entering the season as title favourites, Bayern had a new manager. Former Eintracht boss Niko Kovač was now in charge, presenting an unpredictable future. Considered by some to be an underwhelming appointment, Kovač needed to deliver under pressure. The Croat’s time in charge started well as the team won their opening four games in typical Bayern style. However, the team went through an unexpected rough patch. Winning just twice in eight games, Bayern fell down to sixth during October; simply not good enough for a club like Bayern. Meanwhile, rivals Borussia Dortmund ended the year with a nine-point lead at the top and looked sure to knock Bayern off their perch.
As Dortmund presented a near impossible task, Bayern knew they had no room for error. Kovač and his team rallied, winning seven on the bounce. The team were now second, with Dortmund in their sights. Slipping up against Bayer Leverkusen, some were convinced the title race was over, surely Bayern couldn’t go unbeaten. In reply, they picked up 11 wins and three draws, including a 5-0 Der Klassiker win over Borussia Dortmund. Battling against one of the best Dortmund teams in years, Bayern found a way, as the club proved once again why they’re der Rekordmeister.
End of an Era
Two club legends, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, are leaving the club. Joining Bayern in 2007, Ribery leaves after winning 23 trophies with the club. The Frenchman also contributed 86 goals and 120 assists in the Bundesliga alone. A fan favourite, Ribery’s career with Bayern was simply stunning. From memorable goals to his Ballon d’Or worthy season, Ribery will be missed. Now 36-years-old, Ribery is sure to find another club before retiring, as he showed flashes of brilliance during his final season in Munich.
Known by many as Mr Wembley, Robben will be departing the club as well this summer. Joining Bayern in 2009, the Dutchman went on to contribute 99 goals and 62 assists in the Bundesliga. Just like his fellow club legend, Robben is very accomplished, winning 19 trophies with the club. A big stage player, the 35-year-old has been crucial in Europe. Scoring 31 Champions League goals, Robben is known for scoring the last minute winner in the 2013 Champions League final against rivals Borussia Dortmund. Just one of many memorable moments both players have given Bayern fans over the years. Ending the season on a high, both Ribery and Robben scored in their final league game for the club.
Player of the Season
A team full of great players, the player of the season award is a tough one to give out. Striker Robert Lewandowski scored 22 goals and was crucial to the team’s title win. Midfield maestro Thiago is invaluable to the team’s success on the pitch but neither he or Lewandowski have won the award. This seasons player of the season is German full-back, Joshua Kimmich. Putting together a superb season, Kimmich has become one of Bayern’s most valuable players. Unusual for a full-back to be so influential, the 24-year-old has been pivotal to the clubs recent success.
Contributing two goals and 14 assists in the Bundesliga, Kimmich played a key role. Starting every game this season, he also played every minute available this campaign. Involved in 18% of the teams league goals, the German full-back is a creative leader, who has the makings of a future captain. Replacing club legend Philipp Lahm, Kimmich looks set to replicate the World Cup winner by becoming a do it all defender, who is capable of leading the team going forward.
