Falling down the pecking order at West Ham United, Mexican international Javier Hernandez is now reportedly close to a departure from the London based club. According to a report from ESPN, Hernandez will now be taking his services to La Liga side Sevilla. Signing a three-year contract, Hernandez returns to a league and country where he has experienced much success.
Javier Hernandez Departs West Ham for Sevilla
A report from the Daily Mail states that West Ham will receive an £8 million fee for the Mexican forward. Such a fee would represent exactly half of what West Ham originally paid for Hernandez back in 2017. That said, the move is a good one for all parties. Signing both Sebastien Haller and Albian Ajeti this summer, West Ham made Hernandez surplus to requirements.
Finding the back of the net just 17 times in 63 matches for the West London club, Hernandez had struggled to make an impact with the Hammers. Joining West Ham from Leverkusen during the summer of 2017, the Mexican legend was originally seen as a potential leader in the attack. However, Hernandez failed to rekindle the form he demonstrated while in Germany.
Making 28 appearances last season, Hernandez continually struggled for starts and minutes. Now forced to compete against both Sebastian Haller and Albian Ajeti, the 31-year-old Mexican has faded into the background. Even an early season goal against Brighton & Hove Albion was not enough to boost the Mexican into starting contention as he has missed each of the last two matchday squads.
Heading back to La Liga, Javier Hernandez will attempt to find his form once again. During his previous tenure in Spain with Real Madrid, Hernandez became one of La Liga’s best total forwards. Appearing in 33 matches for Real, Chicharito bagged nine goals while also adding nine assists to his total. Not bad for a player who was mostly used as a substitute.
Despite his most recent form, Javier Hernandez remains an incredibly lethal striker. Over the entirety of his career, the Mexican legend has scored a whopping 153 club goals. Adding onto this, Hernandez has added another 51 strikes while on international duty with the Mexican national team.
Recently recalled by Mexico, Hernandez gives Sevilla a quality option at forward. While the Spanish side have a number of quality striker options, one would expect Hernandez to quickly earn a first-team role. Should he do so, this move could represent a steal for Sevilla.
