Samir Carruthers Joins Sheffield United

Samir Carruthers has joined Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee from MK Dons. The midfielder missed the Dons’ stalemate with Chesterfield on Monday as he finalised terms and underwent a medical at Bramall Lane. Upon the discussions, he has signed a three-and-a-half year deal.

The 23 year old, who can play anywhere across the midfield, scored six goals in 137 games for the Dons across two spells. Firstly, on loan from Aston Villa in the 2013/14 season, and permanently after that.

He also featured 39 times in the Dons’ Championship season, after helping them gain promotion in 2014/15.

MK Dons manager Robbie Neilson revealed before Monday’s game that Carruthers was not in the squad. This was because of ongoing negotiations between him and an un-named club. There were rumours that this club was Charlton, as it was said in the press earlier in the week that Karl Robinson was keen to bring his old player to The Valley. Robinson is reportedly still keen to bring in Ben Reeves too.

The Ins and Outs So Far

Samir Carruthers becomes the fourth player to leave Stadium MK already this window. Ryan Colclough’s loan from Wigan was cut short on New Year’s Day, while Jack Hendry’s from the same club will expire on the 7th January.

Robbie Neilson also said after the Chesterfield game that George C Williams has played his last game and he will return to Fulham. It’s rumoured that Sheffield United are interested in taking him on loan from the Londoners.

This high proportion of players leaving the club has not yet been coupled with players coming in. In Monday’s post game interview, Neilson said that he was still talking to two main targets which ‘may take longer’. With Carruthers departing, a midfield player would certainly benefit the Dons.

Despite Nicky Maynard ending his score-less run last Friday, a striker would not go amiss for the Dons this window. Kieran Agard has a respectable tally of seven, one behind Dean Bowditch with nine. Maynard’s one all season is far from good enough though.

It definitely looks like there could be more transfer activity surrounding the club in the coming weeks.
