Wolves Dominate Woeful Burnley as Raul Jiminez Seals Win

Raul Jiminez

Wolves dominated a woeful Burnley side, despite putting just one goal past Joe Hart. Wolves sealed back-to-back wins and clean sheets after Raul Jimenez scored the winner. It was also Wolves’ first win at Molineux in the Premier League since December 2011 when they beat Sunderland 2-1.

Wolves Dominate Burnley at Molineux

Nuno’s Side Control First Half

Wolves dominated from the kick-off, having the majority of possession and controlling the game. Burnley had Joe Hart to thank for keeping the scores level at half-time. Hart was called into action early when a free-kick out wide from Helder Costa evaded everyone and forced the former England keeper into a smart save.

Hart was in the thick of the action again on the 30-minute mark, having to make three saves and, with the help of James Tarkowski, clearing it off the line twice. Firstly, from a Jimenez shot, Hart saved, only for Jimenez’s headed rebound to be cleared off the line. Tarkowski was once again to the rescue after a cross came out to Jonny, who saw his shot cleared off the line. Willy Boly could have scored on the stroke of half-time when he had time in the box but he hit a looping volley just over.

Half-Time Stats

Burnley were only level at half-time thanks to Hart and Tarkowski. Burnley were only able to have four shots on goal compared to Wolves’ 13. The Clarets struggled with 40% possession and pass accuracy of 77%. Wolves, on the other hand, had an 83% pass accuracy.

Jimenez Seals Victory

Burnley were lucky not to be 1-0 down straight after the break when a poor pass back from Phil Bardsley allowed Diogo Jota to nip in and lay it off to Jimenez, who could only blaze over. There was no let up for Hart when Ruben Neves hit a shot from 30-yards, forcing him to turn it around the post.

The constant home pressure finally paid off when Matt Doherty found himself inside the box and played a pass to Raul Jimenez, who guided the ball into the net with some help from the far post. Wolves had numerous chances to put the game to bed first through Helder Costa, who tried to place it in the top corner, only to find the crowd.

Burnley had a chance to get back into the game when a free-kick got flicked on to Matej Vydra at the back post, whose shot fired across the face of goal couldn’t be put in by Jack Cork. That was the only real chance Burnley had at goal. Hart had to make a smart save, at his near post this time, from Adama Traore. Leo Bonatini had a few chances at goal in the final minutes but couldn’t convert.

Full-Time Stats

Nuno will be happy with how his team performed against Burnley, dominating possession with 59% and having a huge 30 shots at goal to Burnley’s seven. This result will carry the player’s confidence in going into their next game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
