Chelsea have just two-and-a-half weeks to save their upcoming Premier League season this summer. The transfer window for the 2018/19 campaign shuts on 9 August, leaving sides unable to make additional changes once the football calendar is underway.
The Blues have wasted the vast majority of their summer with their struggles to sort out their managerial mess. Maurizio Sarri was finally appointed as the new boss, however, he does not have a lot of time to make the changes he may have liked.
Additions For Chelsea to Become Genuine Title Contenders
Jorginho has already arrived, but the former Napoli manager will need to look to make a number of signings if Chelsea are to become genuine title contenders in his first year at Stamford Bridge.
He may have to look at the squad members he has with him in Australia, rather than the transfer market.
With the added concern that a number of players are rumoured to be destined to depart, he will need to act quickly and these men could help give them a chance.
Goalkeeper – Kasper Schmeichel
Thibault Courtois’ future is up for debate at the moment, whilst Willy Caballero had a poor World Cup.
Kasper Schmeichel has been linked and with a capable defence, he could shine for the Blues. The son of legendary Peter, the Dane shone at the world’s biggest tournament this summer and has proved his Premier League quality.
He helped lead Leicester City to an unbelievable Premier League title and could help the Londoners do it as well.
Defender – Kalidou Koulibaly
The club’s defence is a strange one at the moment. The likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen should feature regularly. Cesar Azpilicueta is a guaranteed starter with Marcos Alonso as his wing-back partner.
However, Gary Cahill has been in and out of the team and it is uncertain how Sarri will see him once he is back from his break. Kurt Zouma is another. The Frenchman looked solid in his first season at Chelsea, but was sent on loan to Stoke City and was part of their relegated side.
The former Napoli manager could look to raid his old club for Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegal international would instantly boost the team and also provide an attacking threat going forward.
Midfielders – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Mateo Kovacic
Rumours have started to suggest that N’Golo Kante could head to Paris Saint-Germain. Chelsea will need to find a player that can replicate his job, which will be extremely difficult.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is a man that could help solve that issue should it arise. The Serbia international has proved he can dominate the midfield and would provide a huge presence, as Nemanja Matic once did.
Considering he is just 23, he should have a number of years left at the top level of the game and would work tirelessly in the middle of the field.
Mateo Kovacic could be another great addition for Sarri. The Real Madrid star is reportedly ready to quit the Spanish capital and Chelsea should be at the front of the queue for the Croatian.
The 24-year-old is a very tidy player that would bring another dimension to the Blues this summer.
He would add some extra creativity to the Stamford Bridge outfit and would be a younger option that Cesc Fabregas. Although a move would appear to be unlikely with the addition of Jorginho.
Wingers – Anthony Martial and Leon Bailey
Both Eden Hazard and Willian want to head to La Liga. One to Barcelona, the other to Real Madrid. Chelsea will not be able to afford to lose both. They will need to bring in a marquee signing to replace at least one of them.
Anthony Martial could be one man they target with the Frenchman wanting to leave Manchester United. The winger did not get as much game time as he would like at the Red Devils and has made it clear he would like to move.
His pace and creativity down the flanks, as well as his goalscoring ability, would make him an attractive target this summer. However, it remains to be seen if Jose Mourinho would sell to his former club.
Leon Bailey is another. The Bayer Leverkusen winger shone in the Bundesliga last season, which has seen a number of sides interested. He netted 12 times in 34 appearances.
He is held in high regard by many in the football world and the 20-year-old would come with a hefty price-tag.
Strikers – Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic
Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud could both leave this summer. Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham would be the only recognised strikers left at Stamford Bridge.
Sarri will need a potent strikeforce if the duo mentioned do decide to call time on their careers in London.
Gonzalo Higuain is one man that has been linked strongly since the new manager arrived. The pair worked together at Napoli and the Argentina international could be available following Juventus’ latest addition; Cristiano Ronaldo.
Another of his team-mates could also be available this summer, with Mario Mandzukic also thought to be considering his options.
The World Cup finalist could decide to leave Turin following CR7’s arrival and could head to Chelsea. He would become a real attacking threat for the Blues in the Premier League.
