Match Review

Newport County certainly shocked their hosts today with a fine performance and secured their first win under new boss Graham Westley. The Boys in Amber started well and almost took the lead in the first minute when Myrie-Williams found space from 15 yards, but fired the ball into the side netting.

Stanley seemed to struggle with Newport’s approach to the game and allowed the visitors to dominate the possession, but Newport failed to really test Elliott Parish in the home goal.

Right at the beginning of the second half, Newport’s Rhys Healey scored a stunning individual goal. Racing from within his own half, the striker held off his marker before firing into the top right-hand corner for his second Newport goal.

The Exiles then doubled their lead on the hour mark though Jazzi Barnum-Bobb, when the former Cardiff City youngster struck from within the box after an assist from Healey. The travelling fans were starting to believe they could actually win this game.

Accrington were shocked, but finally found the back of the net though former Newport player Janoi Donacien. The fullback pounced after Gary Taylor-Fletcher’s shot was saved by Joe Day to volley home the goal.

But it was Newport who had the final say, with Josh Sheehan getting a well deserved goal in the fifth minute of injury time to make it a 3-1 away victory for Newport County. Once again, Healey picked up an assist.
