Swansea City have opted not to renew Carlos Carvalhal’s contract, following the club’s relegation to the Championship.
Carlos Carvalhal to Leave Swansea City
Carvalhal was appointed as Swans boss back in December and was tasked with securing their Premier League status for another season. However, he failed to so and thus, the Welsh club have chosen to part ways with him.
Swansea have been on a downward slope since Garry Monk was sacked back in 2015. Carvalhal’s departure means they have now sacked five managers since Monk left.
Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins said: “We’d like to put on record our thanks to Carlos for his enthusiasm, hard work and commitment since arriving at the club in December.
“Naturally, we are all disappointed with the club’s relegation from the Premier League, and following discussions with Carlos, we felt it was in the best interests of both parties that we move in a new direction.
“We will now be looking to appoint a new manager in readiness for the 2018-19 season.
“While there are already rumours linking us with several managers, it is vital that we identify the right person to take this team forward.”
Next to Take the Hot Seat
Swansea are now looking at a number of potential candidates to take the job. Graham Potter, who is currently Östersund manager, has been tipped as the favourite to take over the reigns.
The Englishman has been with the club since 2011, and they have reached remarkable heights with him in the hot seat. They have achieved promotion three times, as well as reaching the Europa League last-32 back in March – an incredible feat for the Swedish club.
Potter’s experience with leading his club to promotion could be vital to Swansea, who are looking for just that type of character to guide them back to the Premier League.
Frank de Boer has also been linked to the job, while other names such as Dean Smith and Lee Johnson have also been mentioned.
