Barnsley have terminated the contracts of three members of their management team after a 4-1 defeat to Derby confirmed their relegation to League One.
Jose Morais Has Contract Terminated
Morais, Dimis Teixeira and Joao Cunhã all joined the club in February after the departure of Paul Heckingbottom to Leeds United. The trio started life at the Tykes with a home loss to Burton Albion, who were also relegated on the final day of the Championship season.
Morais only picked up 13 points in his 15 games in charge, with Barnsley struggling for any consistency all season. There was a clause in the contract of each of the staff members stating that relegation would result in a termination of their deals.
A 2-0 win over Brentford last weekend had given Barnsley hope of a last-day revival. However, Bolton Wanderers’ late comeback against Nottingham Forest, as well as Barnsley’s own 4-1 loss to Derby, meant that Morais was unable to prevent Barnsley making a return to Leauge One.
The Big Contributor
The main problem for the Tykes all season, not just under Morais, has been lack of goals. Oli McBurnie and Tom Bradshaw finished the season as joint top-scorers with nine, while Leicester youngster Harvey Barnes, on-loan at the club in the 2017 part of the season, was third with five.
The statistics show a lack of a clinical finisher amongst the Barnsley squad. They averaged 14.8 shots per game over the season, more than Bolton who averaged 10.8. Gary Madine, who left the Trotters in January for Cardiff, finished as their top scorer with 10.
A Sad Day for the Tykes
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after the relegation was confirmed, Barnsley chief executive Gauthier Ganaye said: “Today is a sad day, we will discuss later what has gone wrong during the season.
“When you are the head of the organisation you have to take the responsibility, and today I take my part of the responsibility in what’s happening.
“My responsibility now is to make sure that we’re going to roll up our sleeves, work hard and come back stronger next season.”
