With the summer just getting started, Fabrizio Romano has issued yet another Manchester United transfer update, claiming that the club will sign a new backup goalkeeper over the next few months with loanee Jack Butland set to move to Rangers and not sign permanently at Old Trafford. This comes alongside rumours that United are looking to replace David de Gea as the first choice between the sticks, meaning that the Red Devils may finally overhaul this area of their team that has been a problem for some time.

David de Gea has been a mainstay in the team at Old Trafford for the last 12 years, carrying United through some of their toughest times in recent memory with some truly breathtaking performances.

More recently, though, the Spaniard has hit a rough patch of form which all seemed to start during the 2018 World Cup when he made some uncharacteristically simple errors.

This carried through to his club form, as De Gea would make some shocking mistakes over the next year or two.

His form started to pick up as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United started shaping up in mid-2020, but never fully returned to the level fans had become used to seeing.

The 2022/23 campaign may be seen as a success for De Gea, having won the Premier League Golden Glove award, but it was not a term without mistakes, and many fans believe he should be replaced regardless due to his poor ability on the ball and in the air.
