There have long been reports highlighting Chelsea’s interest in Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez. However, the sticking point has always been the price tag set by the Portuguese club, and there were hopes from the Blues that Benfica would eventually become more flexible on the fee.
However, that doesn’t appear to be the case, with Fabrizio Romano recently reporting that: “Benfica are still on the same position with Enzo Fernandez: €120m [£106 million] or nothing.”

Fernandez’s World Cup Campaign
There is no doubt that the 20222/23 season has been the Argentine’s breakout season, however, it was his World Cup campaign in particular which caused his stock to rise.
First of all, Argentina won the World Cup, and that certainly did his reputation no harm. However, it was his individual performances that really caught the eye.
The 22-year-old scored one goal and one assist in the tournament, and his energy and ability on the ball were vital in ensuring Argentina lifted the illustrious trophy. In fact, even the great Lionel Messi, who has played with countless world-class players, is a huge fan of his.

When asked about the midfielder, Messi replied: “I’m not surprised by Enzo. I know him and I see him train every day. He deserves it because he’s a spectacular player.”
A Desperate Need
Whether it be Fernandez or a cheaper alternative, Chelsea need to sign a midfielder either in this window or in the summer. N’golo Kante and Jorginho are both edging ever closer to the end of their contracts, although the latter has received a proposal for a new deal with the club.
But, if the pair fail to agree on new contracts, then Graham Potter would be left incredibly short on numbers in the middle of the park. The Blues do have the option to make Dennis Zakaria’s loan deal a permanent one, however, even still, Potter would likely want an extra midfielder in the squad.

Enzo Fernandez would be a great signing for that reason, but Chelsea may just be priced out of a move for the Argentine if Benfica remain firm on their asking price.
