Manchester United were not involved involved in Ivan Toney transfer talks in the summer transfer window, confirms Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils opted against signing a new centre-forward in the summer after Cristiano Ronaldo ended up staying for at least another season.

Brentford Adamant Not to Sell Toney in the Summer

After the kind of success which he had in the Premier League last season, scoring 12 goals and providing 5 assists, the 26-year-old Englishman attracted a lot of interest from other clubs. Romano adds that despite many clubs showcasing their desire to sign him, Brentford were adamant that he was an ‘untouchable’ in the squad and they would not be selling him for any amount possible.

That is why no club really put in a concrete transfer proposal for the striker, knowing that the Bees were unwilling to negotiate a move for him. United also didn’t make any offer for him in June, despite some rumours, as they were more focused on reinforcing other positions in the team ahead of the centre-forward role. They ended up signing Ajax winger Antony to bolster their attack, with Erik ten Hag opting not to sign a new centre-forward for this season.

Toney’s Journey From Lower Leagues to England International

The 26-year-old has gone through a lot of highs and lows in his career and played in a number of different leagues in the English football pyramid over the years. He started his career with League Two club Northampton Town, before joining Newcastle United in 2015. However, he only made 2 appearances for the Magpies and was loaned to League One clubs for the next few years. In 2018, he joined League One side Peterborough United and after scoring 49 goals in 94 appearances for them, Brentford signed him up in 2020.

Toney has since helped the Bees get promoted into the Premier League and has scored 52 goals in 97 appearances for them. The 26-year-old recently received his first England call-up for the upcoming games against Germany and Italy after having scored 144 goals in his domestic career. The Englishman has already scored 5 goals in 7 Premier League goals this season and is among the best strikers in the league right now.
